Standing Committee for Youth Justice (SCYJ) new report on ensuring custody is the last resort for children in England & Wales. SCYJ is an alliance of organisations working to improve the youth justice system in England and Wales. We advocate a child-focused youth justice system that promotes the integration of children in trouble with the law into society and tackles the underlying causes of offending. Such a system would serve the best interests of the children themselves and the community at large.
TLG CEO Andrez Harriott says ” I am an advocate of alternatives to custody for some children. We know that some children must be in custody for the safety of the public and as a punishment for an offence committed. However, custody is not the place for children overall and we must proactively look at therapeutic alternatives which remove children from their immediate surroundings for a while with the view to reintroduce them once it is safe to do so”.
